- 01The pretty but very narrow main street, calle Real, as it winds its way through the village.
- 02These beautiful decorations adorn the length of the main street. This is just one of many designs.
- 03The narrowing entrance to the old village with the arches of the granary silos visible on the left and the old sugar factory just out of view to the extreme right. More cobble designs are visible on the street.
- 04The village police station.
- 05Panoramic view of the old village of Frigiliana in earlier years with the same impressive backdrop of the sierra and natural park as it has now.
- 06The scene of the weekly market in Frigiliana held every Thursday from 09:00 - 14:00.
- 07A young lad leads this mule along the main street, followed closely behind by the owner with another. As the main street is the only street with vehicular access, the owner of these two mules offers a specialist service of transporting building materials and rubble, heavy shopping, large and heavy objects and anything else too heavy to be carried up the steep and narrow streets.
- 08A man on horseback carefully leads this foal through the village. These and many other charming idiosyncracies of country life still abound in Frigiliana.
- 09One of many fountains to be found in the village that takes its water from a mountain spring. The entire region is dominated by limestone rock which has the unfortunate circumstance of the water being very hard.
- 10Hernando El Darra, one of few streets giving access to the higher reaches of the village. If you look closely, you may just be able to read the tiled sign on the wall which reads, "The Garden Restaurant."
- 11A typical row of houses along the main street. Notice the architectural asymmetry: the conflicting rooflines, the adhoc positioning of windows, doors and balconies and their relative difference in size to each other. Some entrance doors lead up while others lead down. A first floor bedroom window seen to be directly above an entrance doorway does not necessarily correlate to an architecturally habitable association between the two rooms.
- 12A typical Frigiliana cul-de-sac leading off the main street and to a small, quiet and secluded courtyard surrounded by various houses.
- 13One of many passageways to be found in the village. This one in particular shows how the houses were built right up to the edge of the mountain face with just enough room for a small passageway which the locals have ceremoniously painted in lime and decorated with plants and flowers.
- 14A view over the red clay tile rooftops of Frigiliana through to a misty and smokey valley in the distance. Look closely and you may just be able to see a little section of the main street just to the right from centre of the photo. A tell-tale sign is the curvature of the buildings as they curve upwards in the photo.
- 15Another passageway leading through a tunnel that was built under someone's house.
- 16A nice view of the immediate countryside surrounding the village. The walkway that is visible runs the entire length of the village and marks the distinctive and abrupt boundry between town and country.
- 17One of the most emblematic streets in Frigiliana, calle Zacatin, as seen from standing on the corner with calle Real.
- 18Another spectacular view of the new village overlooking the Mediterranean sea and Nerja down on the coast below.
- 19A photo taken from the 60's - a woman collectiong water from the fountain using a clay receptacle for this purpose, and of course, the ever dependable mule to help her carry it home.
- 20Remains of an ancient water transport system high in the hills above Frigiliana which can be found along one of the trails going up into the mountains. A more modern pipe has been placed on top of the old water conduit. Frigiliana can be seen in the background.
- 21A cascade on the Higueron river, a popular resting point on the trail known as Fuente del Esparto.
- 22Walkers beginning their final ascent of the second highest peak in the Almijara range, Cuesta del Cielo (1,508 metres) which overlooks Frigiliana and Nerja.
- 23The distinctive sanctuary of Pinto Cross on the Frigiliana-Nerja trail.
- 24Walkers making their way down to Nerja from Frigiliana on the Pinto Cross route.
- 25A spectacular mountain scene with a single abandoned and ruinous cortijo lying in the high sierra above Frigiliana.
- 26Another breathtaking view of the sierra showing both its harsh beauty and defined severity.
- 27Fireworks light up the Frigiliana night sky during one of the many festivals.
- 28A night scene during the Festival of the Three Cultures. This festival is held once a year and is a celebration of the time when the Jews, Christians and Muslims all lived together in Frigiliana.
- 29The Frigiliana town hall places significant emphasis on cultural activities, in this case, an orchestra has been summoned to play during one of the festivals.
- 30Women in traditional dress for one of the local ferias, the Romeria de San Antonio.
- 31A typical Frigiliana shop selling local produce, in this case, the wine of Frigiliana which comes in dry, semi-sweet and sweet form. In these shops one can also buy many of the traditional sweets and cakes, honey, dark honey (syrup) from sugar cane and other itmes.
- 32The modern and impressive sports centre offering a very wide range of activities. There is also a gymnasium, an eight lane swimming pool, a large aerobics hall where yoga and pilates are also imparted, facilities for table tennis, and many other activities.
- 33A beautiful night shot of Frigiliana with the old town in the foreground and the new town in the background to the right.
- 34A lovely impression in watercolour of the Plaza de la Iglesia (Church Square).
